Managed Hosting - Software

Ultraspeed has chosen carefully selected software options for deployment within its Managed Hosting environments; Linux CentOS and Microsoft Windows. Ultraspeed also supports a variety of other applications on these two platforms (as well as a number of versions of each operating system).

Operating Systems

CentOS is one of the leading open source distributions of Linux designed for use in enterprise and server environments where stability and security are key requirements. Packages are kept to a minimum and updates are applied when bug or security patches are required. This ensures that updates and reboots for new kernels are kept to a minimum. Ultraspeed deploys both 32- and 64-bit versions of this operating system to satisfy different customer requirements.

Ultraspeed mainly offers Windows 2003 and Windows 2008 Server Editions, with various flavours being deployed depending on the exact application. Windows Server Edition is commonly deployed for enterprise use due to its impressive security and scalability. Ultraspeed deploys both 32- and 64-bit versions of this operating system.

We also commonly provide Managed Hosting environments to customers that are mixed modal, ie have a mixture of CentOS and Windows servers, to service particular requirements.

Support and maintenance of the operating systems are provided as a key part of the Managed Hosting service. Ultraspeed Systems Engineers are all experts in supporting these operating systems and can diagnose common and complex faults. All new operating systems go through extensive testing before deployment into live environments.

Standard Applications

We are experts in advanced configuration (for example, clustered and peer to peer) for both MySQL, the leading open source database server, and MS SQL, the leading commercial database server. Ultraspeed typically deploys IIS on Windows and Apache on Linux, and integrates a wide variety of modules; typical examples are .NET on Windows and PHP/Ruby/Java on Linux. We are also adept at the advanced configuration and operation of Microsoft Exchange Server on Windows platforms.

The deployment of cPanel is recommended for Linux customers. cPanel provides a web-based interface to control websites on a server, and can be useful when a number of websites are deployed on a server. We are expert at the installation, configuration, operation and fault resolution of cPanel. Ultraspeed uses Exim for email requirements on Linux platforms.

Third-party Applications

Although we do not directly support or guarantee performance of third-party applications, Ultraspeed Systems Engineers are extremely adept at constructing and maintaining environments that support a diverse range of applications, and can debug third-party applications, providing feedback to developers or application providers, wherever possible.

Where Ultraspeed believes that an application is not suitable for use within a Managed Hosting environment, alternatives will be actively discussed.
